Greener Greenhill has taken a number of initiatives to encourage people to think of walking more, and thereby to hopefully think more about walking rather than driving.
This started during covid when people were keen to get out of their homes for exercise, and we secured funding from the South Yorkshire Outdoor Pursuits Endowment Fund and South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation to produce a circular walk incorporating as much greenery as possible. Encouraged by this, we created a much shorter walk which picked out four local churches – each of them committing to provide an outdoor bench and a regular opening time for ‘a brew and a loo’.
We have also secured funding for additional benches in local open spaces. Our latest venture involves successful bids to Sheffield Council’s Economic Recovery Fund to promote greater local shopping in Greenhill and Lowedges – on foot, obviously!
