very year, tonnes and tonnes of fresh, organic, local fruit goes to waste. This is because people who are lucky enough to have an apple tree in their garden are not always able to harvest the fruit. This is where Greenhill Community Apple Pickers come in!
We are a volunteer group that harvests unwanted apples in the area and distributes them in our community – Greenhill, Beauchief, Lowedges, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe. We take the apples to community centres and cafes, lunch clubs, nurseries, churches and libraries – anywhere where people gather. The cafes and lunch clubs can use them on the spot but most are left for people to take them home – for free. Harvesting and sharing apples in this way also helps the planet. No pesticides on the fruit and no need for lorries and ships to transport the apples half way across the country or half way across the world.
This year we partnered up with a local school that has apple trees in its grounds to organise an ‘Apple Day’. We learned all about different varieties, swapped recipes and brought an apple press on site to make juice.
