Vigil for the Climate CoP.

Mandate our government to give bold international leadership in addressing the global climate breakdown when it goes to the UN Climate Conference later in November in Baku, Azerbaijan.    

Join others on Sat. 2nd. November at 11:00- 12:00 in a Vigil for Climate and Social Justice at S.Oswald’s Church on the Corner of Abbeydale and Bannerdale Roads, S7 2DL (in the Quiet Garden on the Bannerdale Side of the Church).  If the weather is inclement we will hold it in the crypt (access through the first door on the North side of the church at the top of the drive).

Christian Aid, Cafod, Tearfund, Debt Justice, Global Justice Now and others are focussing on international action the UK Government should be taking to influence and protect low income countries worst impacted by climate breakdown as well as more generally in the international community.  

With many of these countries unable to adapt and tied to fossil fuels by debt and poverty we shall be calling for Loss and Damage Funding to be radically multiplied using the Make Polluters Pay principle.   Climate funding should be additional to and not taken from normal Development Aid and should be given freely as grants, not new debts!   (This follows a dedicated week of action on this topic- see https://makepolluterspay.co.uk/week-of-action .)

We are also speaking up for Small Island States who are calling for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.   This means no new exploration or development of Fossil Fuel resources; a speedier end to the use of Fossil Fuels with a fair phase out of existing stockpiles and production, limiting production subsidies and shifting support to safer and more sustainable alternatives; and a just transition supporting countries to help workers and communities  transition to clean energy and diversifying their economies from dependency on fossil fuel wealth.  In the UK this is largely led by Global Justice Now.
