Developing a Whole-School Approach to Sustainability and Climate Change

The 2023 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that the world was approaching “irreversible” levels of global heating, with catastrophic impacts rapidly becoming inevitable; and that it was “now or never” to take drastic action to avoid disaster.

How is your school responding to the climate and nature emergencies?
The School Strikes for Climate and numerous surveys show that large numbers of young people globally do not believe their education is preparing them for a changing and uncertain future. The Department for Education’s ‘Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy’ wants all schools to appoint a Sustainability and Climate Change Coordinator and to put in place a Climate Action Plan by 2025.

This training session will help school coordinators to develop a whole-school approach to sustainability and climate change. It looks at linking Culture, Curriculum, Campus and Community (along with Futures – careers) in the context of sustainable development, wellbeing and the climate and nature emergencies. Schools will also learn about and be encouraged to join the Climate Friendly Schools initiative so they can access a range of resources and support to continue their journey to put effective Climate Action Plans into place.

Wednesday 15th November (online: 9.30am – 3.30pm) Cost: £140

Building a broad and balanced curriculum through Global Learning

The National Curriculum is only part of a broader School Curriculum. This course aims to enable teachers to plan a curriculum that links to real world issues through global learning, which has been shown to motivate and inspire teachers and pupils. There will be a focus on the importance of developing a holistic curriculum that links knowledge, skills and values to enable young people to become critically-informed and active learners.

The course is delivered as two workshop sessions. The introduction session will enable teachers to make the first steps in planning a curriculum that links to real world issues by focusing on the intent. The continuation session is available at an intermediate / advanced level focusing on curriculum development, teaching and learning, development of whole school ethos, pupil behaviour and values. Sessions can be booked separately or as a package.

Thursday 16th November (online: 3.30pm – 5.30pm) Cost: £60

Engaging with the Global Goals / Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals known as the Sustainable Development Goals. Their aim is to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change by 2030. The World’s Largest Lesson aims to involve every teacher in the world every September in teaching about one of the goals. DECSY is providing training on how to teach about the Global Goals. Look at www.globalgoals.org and worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org and decide which goal you want to focus on and let DECSY know before the training session. Bring your learning to life, help young people make a difference, be part of a global movement for change.

‘Very thought-provoking and inspiring – made me consider how I could teach my class and make changes to my own life.’

Wednesday 22nd November (online: 3.30pm –5.30pm) Cost: £60
